AI in Assessment Example: Level 2

Essay Planning (Philosophy)

At this “AI Planning” level of the five-level AI Assessment Scale (Perkins, et al., 2024) students may use Al for pre-task activities such as brainstorming, outlining and initial research. This level focuses on the effective use of Al for planning, synthesis, and ideation, but assessments should emphasize the ability to develop and refine these ideas independently.

Course: PHIL 108 – Ethics in Philosophy

Assignment Title: Essay on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

Due Date: [Insert Due Date]

Assignment Overview:
In this assignment, you will plan and write an essay exploring the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI). AI tools may be used during the planning and structuring phase to generate ideas, create outlines, and suggest thesis statements. However, the final essay must be written independently, ensuring that the analysis and arguments are entirely your own. The focus of this assignment is to critically engage with the ethical challenges posed by AI, using AI tools only to support the initial stages of your planning.

Objectives:

  • To explore and articulate a well-reasoned ethical argument related to artificial intelligence.
  • To use AI tools to assist in brainstorming, outlining, and structuring your essay.
  • To independently develop the final essay, using AI only for initial planning and organization.

Instructions:

  1. Topic Selection and Initial Brainstorming:
    • Use AI tools to brainstorm potential topics and ethical issues related to artificial intelligence. AI can assist in generating ideas, suggesting various angles for your argument, and highlighting key ethical dilemmas.
    • Reflect on the AI-generated ideas and select a specific ethical issue or question to focus on in your essay. Ensure that the topic is both relevant and allows for a deep ethical analysis.
  2. Outline Creation:
    • Use AI tools to create a detailed outline for your essay, including a thesis statement, key arguments, supporting evidence, and potential counterarguments. AI can help you organize your thoughts and suggest a logical structure for your essay.
    • Review and refine the AI-generated outline, making sure it accurately reflects the direction and scope of your essay. Adjust the outline as needed to ensure it aligns with your independent analysis and argument.
  3. Independent Essay Writing:
    • Based on the AI-assisted outline, write your essay independently. The essay should be 8-10 pages long and present a clear, well-supported ethical argument. Focus on developing your arguments, analyzing ethical principles, and engaging with relevant philosophical theories.
    • Ensure that your essay demonstrates a deep understanding of the ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence, with a clear connection between your thesis and the arguments presented.
  4. Final Submission:
    • Submit your final essay along with the AI-generated outline and a brief commentary (1-2 pages) discussing how AI was used during the planning phase. Reflect on how AI influenced your thinking and organization, and how you ensured that the final essay was independently developed.
    • Include the AI-generated outline as an appendix to your essay, clearly indicating which parts were influenced by AI and how they were refined.

Evaluation Criteria:

– Originality and Depth of Analysis (40%): Presenting a well-reasoned and insightful ethical argument that demonstrates a deep understanding of the topic.

– Critical Engagement with AI Tools (20%): Effectively using AI to assist in brainstorming and outlining, while ensuring that the final essay is independently developed.

– Writing and Clarity (15%): Producing a clear, well-written, and persuasive essay.

– Reflective Commentary (5%): Thoughtful reflection on the AI-assisted planning process and how it influenced the final essay.

Support Resources:

– AI Tools and Software: Access to AI tools such as [specify tools, e.g., ChatGPT, GPT-4, Jasper] will be provided through the university’s philosophy department. Tutorials on using these tools for brainstorming and outlining will be available at the beginning of the assignment period.

– Workshops and Tutorials: Attend workshops focused on AI-assisted essay planning, covering techniques for topic selection, thesis development, and structuring arguments.

– Office Hours: Schedule office hours with your instructor to discuss your essay topic, AI tool use, and strategies for refining and expanding AI-generated ideas.

– Library Resources: The university library offers access to philosophy journals, databases, and relevant literature on ethics. Librarians can assist you in finding sources and navigating AI tools for essay planning.

– Peer Collaboration: Participate in peer review sessions where you can share your AI-assisted outline and receive feedback on how to refine and enhance your ethical argument.
